Work History and Experience
Brian has been working as a counsellor for the past 21 years. Prior to this he was a voluntary counsellor with Samaritans and then Lifeline for 5 years. He has worked at Odyssey Youth Program and The Christchurch City Mission as a Youth and Adult counsellor. He is passionate about his work and is inspired by how people make changes and gain benefits through counselling. One focus for him has been working with adolescent males and other clients struggling to find their place in the World. He believes this is an issue for any age group or gender.
He works with client issues such as anxiety and depression, trauma, abuse, grief and loss. He also works with substance use disorders. He studied Sociology at the University of Canterbury and Counselling at Otago Polytechnic. He is predominately a Person-Centred Counsellor and also uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness. His aim is to create a warm and caring environment for those he works with. He is LGBT friendly.
Brian is a member of New Zealand Association of Counsellors and Ara Taiohi, the professional Youth Workers association in New Zealand.
